My final collection is inspired by weathered textures in the urban environment. Following a photography series in Florence I began exploring walls, pavements and rusted surfaces translating the textures and colours into knit. I started developing ways to create subtle colour changes for a sophisticated and modern colour palette both through yarn selections and structure in the fabrics.
I used Shima Seiki Apex3 software to design jacquards and create virtual knit simulations as well as initial sampling on the 10gg Dubied knitting machine. With the current challenges I have explored digital manipulations of fine gauge swatches to create all over patterns and chunkier pieces. I have also used this time to develop my digital skills to create model illustrations and flats of each design creating a fashion and garment focused collection.
My key influences are the minimalism trend creating updated classics as well as 1970s vintage men’s knitwear, paying particular attention to garment shapes. I have explored abstract expressionism throughout my visual studies and my work is influenced by the geometric shapes and colour proportions of textile artist in the Bauhaus movement.
Sustainability and longevity is the driving force behind my work creating updated classics considering the life cycle of each garment and limiting waste during production. I enjoy exploring and working with innovative yarns such as milk fibre, recycled cashmere and fibres derived from seaweed. I wish to continue exploring more unconventional yarns and continue to look at ways of reducing the environmental impact of both my own work and the industry.
