Sofia Rosso-Gill

Primarily my graphic work explores manual processes with the aim to cause intrigue. Using expressive design my work layers varying levels of depth and texture to reach a visually complicated design, kept simple by the use of colour. Graphic design has an invaluable ability to reach diverse groups of people. This motivates my work, designing with the intention to visually communicate social issues and their practical implications shows the power of graphic design. For instance, my independent project visually explores the act of reading through the lens of those with dyslexia. It aimed to create a bespoke artbook for use in the home which visually explores the act of reading through the lens of those with dyslexia. The artbook presented an opportunity to utilise consumer participation as a means to highlight the challenges people face in reading through a visual narrative.

In another project I chose to explore and expose the use of concentration camps by the Chinese Communist Party to ethnically cleanse the Uyghur population. As one of the biggest human rights violations to date, with up to a million innocent detainees, the project sough to raise awareness of the issue through the use of typography and music. The project aimed to create a visual expression of the struggle through harsh brush strokes. Using elements of Chinese propaganda alongside atomic age type, creating an arch symbol emulating Arabic script, the policy of violent acculturation by the Chinese Communist Party was displayed. This arch created a recognisable symbol for the cause. The hashtag ‘standup’ was often used alongside this in social media, echoing the timeless Bob Marley international human rights song ‘Get Up Stand Up’.

Overall graphic design has the ability to influence peoples perception of social and political issues through provocative and experimental design. Exploring global issues broadens the areas in which I can take inspiration from my research. This further develops my designs, techniques and mediums, as I’m engaging with a variety of countries and cultures. Ultimately, I will continue to find new ways to create accessible work that explores deep injustices in our society.
