Rebecca Burrows

Over the course of my degree I have gained diverse skills as a designer, developing a particularly strong interest in branding and typography. Completing a placement year, interning at 4 different companies in London, has given me great ‘real world’ experience, including work in branding, packaging, app design and campaign design. This experience has given my work a new context, enabling me to excel during my final year. I approach projects in a thorough and professional manner, thinking strategically to create outcomes with well-considered concepts behind them. With a previous background in Fine Art, I have a diverse skill set, including drawing and hand rendered techniques as well as digital processes.

My Independent Project responds to the reliance placed on digital forms of communication throughout society, particularly amongst young people. Whilst we are constantly connected, we are making less meaningful connections, often increasing loneliness and anxiety. I wanted to encourage people to re-communicate, increasing feelings of community and improving quality of life. Hyde Park, Leeds was my focus; as the student centre of the city it is a buzzing and social area, but the typical student lifestyle often disguises mental health issues and can put strain on the relationship between students and locals in the area. The solution was HERE, a brand with 3 clear parts or sub brands, each encouraging those in Hyde Park to re-communicate in different ways: Since We’re Both HERE (prompting good old conversations), Wish You Were HERE (reviving postcards) and What Goes On HERE (print publications celebrating and engaging with community). The brand created is versatile, combining timeless typography, chatty language and sunset-inspired gradients, that can be applied to create distinctive, yet clearly interlinked communications.

The Climate Cows campaign documents the story of a group of cows who are causing mischief in Leeds, protesting to save the planet by stopping humans eating beef. People are encouraged to ‘join the party’ by tracking their beefless days via the Climate Cows website, each day being rewarded with another cow through the gate into a virtual party. Those who have achieved the most beefless days are rewarded with an invite to a real-life beefless party. An easily replicated visual style also encourages flyposting and collaboration with local beefless businesses.

At the start of 2020, inspired by my love of typography, I challenged myself to create a letter each day. This is an ongoing project, which I am proud to have kept up throughout final year deadlines, developing a diverse body of work. The growing collection can be found via @a_letter_each_day on Instagram. Hopefully this has given a good insight into my work. Check out my website and Instagram accounts to see more.
