Lucy Wilding

The main concern of my practice is to capture the movement and life of the koi fish, indicating how they innately swim in groups towards similar directions, creating their own patterns, whilst the natural curvatures of their bodies create lines. The aesthetic depiction of the fish allows me to increase the viewer’s understanding of their natural form and flow.

By exploring their movements within the fluidity of water, I have been able to use the negative space as a suggestion of the water without actually drawing it, thus replacing it by another quality of space which guide the viewer as they follow the movement of the fish.  The white ground also points to the materiality of the paper surface. As watercolour has a semi-transparent quality, it allows for better contrasts with the white of the paper giving a natural luminosity to the washes of colour. The subjects are not contained within the limits of the paper, as they swim in and away from various edges, continuing beyond the picture plane, I wanted to represent the continuity of nature whilst also creating a sense of mystery, allowing the viewer’s imagination to consider what lies beyond the paper.
