My practice sits between a Design and a Fine Art approach, it investigates natural forms and shapes, contrasting these with harder structures such as fragments of architecture. Working through drawing, printmaking and digital designing and printing I aim to make unexpected, complex repeat patterns which can then be applied into different environments. The prints may seem unusually placed in some of these situations, but this only becomes apparent after close investigation. I construct my designs by taking photos of different natural and manmade structures which intrigue me, I draw them to gauge the shape and structure, and then explore these further in various design programmes to experiment with many possibilities inherent in each image, to produce dynamic, bold and thought provoking designs. I test the different ways in which these over-familiar, or even unnoticed, shapes and imagery, can be turned into a surprisingly different designs. For example, for one design, what from afar may look like an abstract piece playing with symmetry, on closer inspection turns out to be developed from a drawing of a staircase. This then can be applied to a wall, such as a wall covering or wallpaper adding further to the ambiguity of interior space and surprise in the piece. When seen in installation my work aims to create a visually attractive scenario, which on further inspection reveals that there is more there than at first meets the eye. This allows the viewer to see it as both a gallery exhibition, but also allows them to step into the space to explore for themselves the performance of different fabrics and materials.
