Through my practice I address issues of mental health awareness, specifically anxiety. In the unexpected circumstances that have arisen recently due to the Coronavirus, there has been a significant increase in the levels of depression and anxiety across Britain. As people are feeling vulnerable, trapped and anxious about what is to come I decided to explore this within my recent work, as the awareness of such issues is even more important now than it has ever been before. I have used photography as a medium to express and consider anxiety and the different emotions that people with mental illness experience/suffer from. Within the genre of photography, I am focusing on portraiture, using this to reflect on the different characteristics that are associated with anxiety. I selected these photographs as I felt the idea of introducing mirrors and reflections within the image allowed for a deeper connection, offered multiple viewpoints and heightened a sense of how some may be feeling confined and alone during this lockdown.
