With the ongoing current environmental crisis, it is more crucial than ever to ensure that we are making conscious purchasing decisions, particularly in supermarkets, where consumption of products with non-degradable packaging occurs regularly.
Inspired by the health warnings apparent on cigarette boxes, my practice explores this through the concept of a ‘fake’ supermarket, consisting of visual merchandising and packaging designs that appear ‘normal’ on the surface, but connote underlying ideas and warnings of environmental issues – triggering an emotional response within the audience which hopefully will subsequently encourage them to reflect on how they consume single use plastics and other toxic materials in their everyday lives. I have subverted current packaging design.
The response / outcomes comprises of a three dimensional model of a replica supermarket, entitled ‘Sustainsburys’ with particular inspiration taken from the interiors, design and colour compositions of Sainsbury’s supermarkets. From this, I have curated a series of photographs which have been digitally manipulated and the addition of character renders allows for realisation of scale and adds to its realism. Lastly, three dimensional mock ups of the 5 most successful packaging designs have been created.
