Adeline Wong

Adeline Wong Unravel. Photography publications. 2020.

Unravel is a collection of three artist books that explore ideas of the self, including insecurities and perceptions. The works build upon a previous series of artist books that similarly explored ideas of the self, it is loosely based upon ideas of archetypes developed by Jung.

Presented as a box, each book has its own box that is contained within the box of the previous book. As such, the books can only be viewed one-by-one in a specific order that imitates getting to know a person Each book addresses an aspect of one’s self, subtitled Persona, Shadow, and Self.

Persona explores ideas of how one presents themselves – the initial impression, especially with the popularity of social media and its trends.

Shadow delves into the fears and insecurities that may or may not be acknowledged – be it to yourself or to others.

Self portrays moments of self-expression – the “true” personalities of each individual.

Striking a balance between literal and abstract ideas, the photographs intend to create an open dialogue where images have been left up to interpretation of the viewers, to associate with personal experiences. There are many different versions of oneself in different contexts and situations, and the fears or one individual may be the strengths of another, and as such there are recurring ideas within each book.
