My collection includes a range of textiles for high end womenswear, focussing on couture embroidery techniques. Through my experimentation with hand embroidery processes, I aimed to explore the various possibilities of these techniques to push the boundaries of hand embroidery and create a range of textures and abstract compositions using beading and embellishment. I focus specifically on the use of extremely intricate and extravagant ornamentation to create fabrics with intense detail and complexity. Throughout my stitch development, I look at the qualities of coral reef and marine life and the ways that this can be translated into stitch using hand embroidery techniques. To do this, I use a range of neutral tones along with bolder, brighter colours which provide a contrast against the subtlety of the delicate organza and silk fabrics. The use of bold colours on a neutral surface helped to highlight the elements of craft and couture embroidery techniques used throughout each piece.
Traditional hand processes play a key part in my work as each element of my final collection uses only hand embroidery and beading techniques. I wanted to demonstrate the importance of these techniques, focussing specifically on those originating in the East. I feel that the preservation of the traditional craft processes used for couture textiles and garments is vital to ensure that they are able to be passed on to future generations, however I also feel it is crucial that we recognise the origin of these craft processes and understand the cultural significance of the techniques that we use.
Throughout my time creating this collection and previous collections, I have been able to develop my couture embroidery skills to a professional level. My time at Leeds has also enabled me to develop skills in areas such as hand drawing and digital design and has also challenged the way I think as a designer. I am more aware of all of the impacts that design has on both society and the environment and am able to make informed choices about the materials and processes I use, to ensure that my work reflects me as a designer. I have a strong desire to further develop my design skills in industry and am currently seeking graduate employment. I hope to expand upon the knowledge I gained during my time working in industry and to be part of a team in which I can demonstrate my own strengths and design abilities as part of a company which reflects my personal style and my values.
