My work is inspired by flora and fauna from both local environments surrounding my hometown in Hampshire and tropical ecosystems. I find the opportunities for the exploration of texture and details within nature particularly inspirational, alongside the wide spectrum of colour seen throughout various habitats. I enjoy working with watercolour to explore and develop my own highly detailed paintings of features seen in nature, with the opportunity to both successfully blend colours while also achieving fine lines and intricate details. My understanding of watercolour techniques and applications is largely inspired by botanical artist’s such as Margaret Mee. I hope that the high levels of detail within my painted imagery highlight the beauty and diversity of the environments surrounding us and need to protect our planet’s species.
I am very interested in the possibilities for creating subtle surface textures within my work, replicating 3 dimensional features of nature, through the use of techniques such as laser engraving. Meanwhile, alongside my illustrative work with watercolour I am also very interested in the potential of linear forms, which can offer both very traditional effects, and much more contemporary design work depending on the motif style and colour palettes used.
In addition to my own research and development of colour palettes and techniques from exploration of flora and fauna, I also work to ensure my collections are commercially viable by incorporating colour and trend forecasts into my research.
