MY WORK:
My design portfolio aims to encapsulate a range of different influences and touch upon varying market levels. Two of my collections were inspired by Indian Artisanal Techniques, with one focusing on woodblock printing for Ulla Johnson and the other focusing on embroidery for Anthropologie. Both of these collections aimed to celebrate these crafts in a modern way whilst respecting the traditions, cultures and people from which they originated. Elsewhere, my collection designed for JW Anderson aimed to showcase my ability to experiment with cutting edge developments in silhouette and drape, with relics from nature providing the inspirational background. My collection for Celine inspired by the ‘sans-culottes’ movement seen during the French Revolution aimed to focus on luxury styling, interpreting a historical menswear influence for the modern day woman.
My Innovation project aimed to combine the innovation of transforming garments against the inspiration that could be taken from Monolithic Architecture. I created my own brand named ‘LORENZI’ for this collection which aims to experiment with cutting edge silhouette and drape whilst providing an overall minimalist aesthetic for the contemporary woman.
My dissertation project explored the important issue of counterfeit and knock-off design practises within the contemporary fashion industry and the extent to which this is deemed desirable by the consumer. Consumers were engaged through face to face semi-structured interviews where they were asked about their past and potential future purchasing behaviours with regard to these products and their opinions about this as a design practise.
MY HIGHLIGHTS:
Overall, this has been a challenging and rewarding year. Having the autonomy to make creative decisions and design our own projects has been a welcome and stimulating challenge. Alongside my creative endeavours I have also been using my final year at university to engage with the modules delivered by the team at Languages For All where I have taken Advanced French. Not only have I finished this module feeling confident about my French language abilities but also with a deeper appreciation of cultural expression and the importance of making inter-cultural links. My favourite part of this module was when I had the opportunity to combine my language abilities with my main studies and deliver a presentation in French about current developments surrounding sustainable fashion.
I have also had the pleasure of serving this amazing group of talented and passionate young designers as their course representative and I have been continually inspired by the strength, resilience and creative flair they have shown. The class of 2020 has had to deal with some undoubtedly unusual circumstances however even in the face of adversity, we have remained bold designers and supportive peers. Our future is very bright.
