Fashion design has been something I have dreamed about since being a little girl and so being able to study fashion design at university was a huge step in the right direction. I know my limits and my talents and despite doing well in college university was extremely tough for me. I found out later that the reason for this was at least in one part associated with dyslexia which I was diagnosed officially with in my first year at university.

Despite this I have been able to push myself to overcome difficulties in academia and the workplace without the support I needed or the guidance to do so to get to this point and so I decided he best way to complete university was to do the same however it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as successful without the help of my understanding tutors. I have always relished a challenge and I love to prove to myself and to others that I am capable of anything particularly if I’m told I can’t and this is in part why I love the fashion industry. Every day, I get the opportunity to express myself and push myself further and with every collection I make, I learn and grow. To me, fashion is not just a hobby – it is who I am.

Throughout my time at university I learned that I was more suited to menswear design, I like designing clothing that still has space to grow and I felt more comfortable and successful at doing that with menswear. I also learned more about the impact fashion can have on the planet and though my time I learned that we can do better and it could be in small ways of big ways. This started with my second year and continued throughout my year in industry where I responsible for writing New Look’s conscious range, copy for online for their more environmentally friendly products. This then became my inspiration for the final collection in my innovation module as well as my dissertation.

My year in New Look let me explore a variety of roles including writing the online website, organising the layout and creating categories for the online store and styling the outfits along side, shopping the look, wardrobe organisation, in and out of products to the studio and finance management. I learnt a vast range of skills to accompany design which I feel would help me fill a role in a smaller company or even my own as well as gain an understanding of how online shopping works in industry for a large company.

The university learning curves has shown me that I am capable of becoming a fashion designer and with the ongoing support of my tutors, shown through my years of university, that I am able to succeed despite any obstacles or difficulties I may have. My collections and work I feel shows my growth, even in final year as my development and improvement can be seen from one collection to the next.
