Faye Wetherall

Often working away from the canvas and in three-dimensional form, my practice operates between painting and sculpture. Interested in the idea of painting in the expanded field, I intend for my work to alter preconceived expectations of what painting might be through exploring different surfaces and processes of working.

Underpinning my practice is an exploration into colour, shape, form and abstraction. The colours used are bright, bold and high pitched to form dynamic compositions. The effects of different combinations of colours are explored and both soft and hard edges are employed. Through my practice I am interested in testing what paint can do, what textures and surfaces it can make and so opacity and application of paint varies, retaining a playful approach throughout.

Improvisation and chance also play their part. Working freely and with no end goal in mind, when I apply paint to a surface, I allow anything to happen. This is an exciting way to work, one that requires risk and vulnerability. I often work on a number of pieces at one time to allow my work to form organically. This open-ended way of working is reiterated in the way I display my work.

My work often reflects and responds to architectural qualities, and in some paintings where shapes are neatly placed next to one another a geometric framework is formed.  I often work on a number of pieces at one time to allow my work to form organically with ideas migrating from one piece to the next. As a result of this, not necessarily deliberately, my paintings are in conversation with each other when in exhibition.
