PERSONAL STATEMENT
MY PORTFOLIO:
During my 4 years at the University of Leeds, I have designed numerous collections for different market levels and customer profiles. I have chosen 3 of my favourite collections to show within this portfolio.
GRAFFITI X CONSIGNED channels the fluidity, shape, and boldness of graffiti with pops of neon contrasted with earthly backdrops for an Autumn/Winter 2021 collection for the brand CONSIGNED. Using various innovative fabrics such as netting and PVC, as well as techniques such as bleaching, burning, dyes, and spray paint, this collection brings together the essence of graffiti. The inspiration for this project came from a day out in Manchester where graffiti can be found everywhere. I felt this would be perfect for CONSIGNED, an online streetwear brand that predominantly sells bags. I took it upon myself to design its first full womenswear collection.
ZIGGY STARDUST X MONKI is inspired by my love for the artist David Bowie. I especially love his personas, my favourite being the iconic Ziggy Stardust era. I used this persona as the focus of my next collection for Monki Spring/Summer 2021. Using old prints and repurposing them, along with exaggerated silhouettes inspired by Ziggy’s love for space-age, encapsulates Bowie’s era for a fun and summery high street collection.
URBAN DECAY X ANN DEMEULEMEESTER sees a more luxurious collection for Autumn/Winter 2021. Inspired by the state of abandoned buildings and decay, this collection incorporates techniques such as burning, slashing, free hand stitching, loose knit, bleaching, and layering to emulate the effect of urban decay, along with a muted colour palette and interesting, unique garments to make it appropriate for Ann Demeulemeester.
MY DESIGN STYLE:
I tend to look for the beauty in things people usually find ugly, which is why I am inspired mostly by things such as decay. I feel I have an unpolished, rugged way of design where my garments show what I am feeling rather than being precise and refined. My preferred way of designing is actually by hand, something that I haven’t seen all too often throughout my course, however I am also able to digitally design and add bits via computer too. I have tried to challenge myself in my final year by designing out of my comfort zone by making my own prints, and also designing for streetwear, something I haven’t previously done yet the final collection turned out to be my favourite.
HIGHLIGHTS:
I have enjoyed so much throughout my degree and feel I have grown so much as a designer, with improved knowledge of fabrics, colour, silhouette etc, and also being able to discover and incorporate my own style into my work. My year in industry was one of the best experiences whilst at university where I interned at Regatta LTD, and also Extras Group, who own Smith and Canova, Claudia Canova, ARTSAC, and CONSIGNED. I thoroughly enjoyed these placements and I feel they have prepared and excited me to work in the industry.
