My practice stems from my fascination with the built environment, in particular the angular harshness of brutalist architecture. The materiality and construction methods used along with how light and shadows play with geometric form is especially intriguing. My geometric abstractions explore the structure of these building through the use of colour, space and form. The shadows that are cast across the building landscape change with time, seasons and light, altering perception and inspire my architectural compositions using form and colour to reflect on the ever-changing perception of time. My work originated from photographic images taken whilst exploring London Southbank and its Brutalist Architecture along with the Barbican Centre in East London.
Both tonal and contrasting colours play a significant role in defining space and engaging the viewer. Colour helps create representational compositions with soft neutral tones contrasting with bold bright colours whilst also creating depth and form. Flat areas of colour are met by the illusion of three-dimensional structures that sit in the foreground. The smallest addition or subtraction of colour or shape can completely transform an image. My geometric abstractions bear little resemblance to the original buildings whilst still retaining a brutalist realism.
