What do you see?
‘Continued’ takes inspiration from the fast fashion industry and aims to challenge public perception. What are you going to do in aiding the ongoing issue? The focus of my practice is to question relationships with consumerism and ideals of beauty. By creating toile patterns which are generally perceived as beautiful and elegant, the installation invites you to explore the designs and hopefully understand that there is more there than what first meets the eye. The final works look to capture attention with this beautiful toile fabric, which when inspected further, uncover harsh truths. They depict the Bangladesh building collapse, protests surrounding London Fashion Week and place emphasis on Extinction Rebellion. The juxtaposition in the work creates a personal debate, done in the hope to inspire others into being more conscious when consuming in the future. Extending the life of clothes by just 9 months results in a decrease of carbon, water and waste footprints by 20-30% each, even small changes such as understanding how transparent companies are with social and environmental responsibility can help greatly, in being more conscious when you consume. The continuous nature of glorifying how quickly items of clothing can be produced, distorts our view to see the real image of how it actually glorifies the exploitation of factory workers. Ideally I wanted to create a pop up shop, with the garments displayed alongside typographic artwork. Being sustainable is not as difficult as it seems, and it is hoped that this work can project that to its viewers.
