Personal Statement :
Although the class of 2020’s time at university has been cut short, the experiences and enjoyment from being at the University of Leeds is something to be cherished for a lifetime. I have learnt to adapt by taking part in virtual degree shows, using social media platforms to promote work and creating a sewing studio in my bedroom.
About My Portfolio:
The motherboard – Inspired by the motherboard within a computer, this seasonless sportswear collection for Stella McCartney x Adidas explores eccentric prints and seams details that follow the shaping on the motherboard. When the computer turns on, the motherboard emits a contrasting bold blue colour, inspiring the colour palette for this collection.
Cerebral Organoid – When Cerebral Organoids are placed under a UV light, a colourful glow is emitted helping distinguish the effects of the brain cells. This vibrant glow has inspired the colour palette and prints for this S/S 21 collection for Monki. Close up photographs of the cells has inspired gathering and ruffle details, forming the key silhouette for this concept.
The Gothic Quarter – Built in the 18th century and renovated in the 20th century, the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona is filled with Roman history and medieval gothic architecture. This A/W 2021 collection for Alexander McQueen is inspired by the archway shaping and the textured brickwork within the Quarter.
Inside a Computer- The computer has become a huge part of many people’s day-to-day lives, through emailing, writing and looking at the internet. This concept looks directly inside the computer through primary photographs, revealing unusually shaped components and intricately hidden details. Twisting of wires, the fan and the motherboard have formed the key silhouette inspiration for this collection.
Folding with a non-sewing construction – Notably, the industry has kept with the conventional construction method of sewing when combining garment fabric pieces together. Other manufacturing processes including the sonic bonder and bondaweb have not been fully utilised in a whole womenswear collection. Inspired by the geometric shapes in Rem Koolhaas’s buildings, garments are evolved incorporating innovative folding pattern cutting techniques and structured silhouettes.
My Design Aesthetic:
Since my childrenswear internship at Joules, I loved the use of bold colourations and prints. I have used this experience in my final year womenswear collection by adding neons, primary colours and eye-catching graphic prints
Highlight of My Degree:
My 13 month childrenswear and accessories design internship at Joules. I particularly focused on girlswear and babyswear, so it was really interesting covering another market in design. I was given the opportunity to design all the AW20 baby’s accessories. I loved making the mood boards of my initial ideas and then presenting them to the heads of design.
